Weddings at the Bridge Inn

The Bridge Inn is licensed for Civil Marriage Ceremonies, catering for small weddings in our Eskdale Room & Bistro and for larger parties in our Wasdale Banquet Room. We are always pleased to discuss your individual requirements from a few guests up to 100 seated or 200 for Evening Buffets.

Your special day requires a special place. Photographs can be taken on the bridge with the backdrop of the Screes and Irton Pike or, a short drive away, there is Wastwater – the deepest lake in England with the Screes and Scafell in the picture... paradise itself!

The Registry Office

Once you have made a provisional booking for the date you wish to be married, you will need to contact the Registrar's Office in Whitehaven. The Superintendent Registrar is: Mr Paul Gannon Tel: 01946 506190. The registrar will let you know of the costs involved and the relevant paperwork that needs to be completed before you can get married.

The Ceremony

There is a choice of vows which can be taken and you may also choose to have music played or a poetry reading, however, these must not be of a religious nature.

Approximately thirty minutes before the ceremony, the Groom will meet the registrar, and then go into the marriage room.

The Bride will see the registrar fifteen minutes before the ceremony for a private interview. During this time the guests are seated in the marriage room. Two witnesses must be chosen to sign the register before the marriage ceremony takes place.

The Bride now makes her entrance, joining the Groom, and faces the registrar for the wedding vows. The wedding ceremony takes approximately fifteen to twenty minutes, after which the wedding party are led by the Bride and Groom for the arrival drinks, which are served by our staff.

The Reception

After the civil ceremony in the licensed marriage room (or when the party arrives from the church ceremony), our staff serve welcome drinks to the guests.

Every Bride and Groom will have different needs and tastes for this important day. We can provide a reception varying from formal to completely relaxed. Just tell us what you want.

If there is to be an evening reception, we can cater for up to 200 people in our function room with dancing to either our recommended disco or entertainment of your choice.
